Mens August 2015 Race Report

Written by

August 2015

There was only one Road Race League/Club Championship race in August... though September is going to be a busier month starting with the BEAST this weekend - which as the name suggests is a little tough! I look forward to seeing a mass sea of orange there (entries are closed so if you didn't get in early unfortunately you miss out on the 'fun').

The next race is our own Littledown 5 - where hopefully everyone who is available will turn out to support the club race with the marshalling (and potentially we will have a team in the race if we have enough marshals). - If you can help on the day please just come along on the morning at 8:45am at the rear of  the LDC inside the cricket pavillion - Race Secretary

Results for August were:

Stur Half (Sunday 3rd August) - 380 finishers

I might be biased but what a beautiful setting in North Dorset... with the race starting from my old High School/Sixth Form! It's a well marshalled undulating course through the beautiful and hilly countryside. A great Harrier turnout on the day - well done to all who raced. The weather was a little warm... and seemed to warm up as the race went on - making it a hard race on the day. A special mention goes to Vice Captain Luke Dowsett for his first half marathon and longest race so far (and his guaranteed PB!).

Salisbury 54321 (Sunday 9th August)

Thanks to Dave Wilson for feeding back on the 50k:

The race blur:

The Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 walk, or trail run is an event suited to all the family, with a choice of distances  from  5km  to  the  more  demanding  42k/Marathon,  or  even  a  50k  Ultra  Marathon.  The  routes  will  be  over  footpaths,  bridleways  and  quiet  country  roads  in  the  Salisbury Wessex  area.  The  walk/trail  runs,  will  take  you  past  a  variety  of  sites  of  historical  and scientific interest and through Country states not usually open to the general public  This has been made possible by the kind permission of several landowners along the route and including English Heritage.

I ran the 54321 half marathon last year and enjoyed the scenic course, so I decided this event would be a good time to run my first ultra. It's 50k (just over 31 miles), so not much longer than a marathon! I decided to take it relatively steady and take in the views.

After the second (or was it the third) visit to the porta loo, it was time to start. It was already warming up, but the wind was minimal, and no rain. After about 5 miles at the top of Old Sarum the ultra and marathon routes became one.

There were many water and squash stations (these were needed as it was getting hot). Some had Mars Bars, Bread pudding and other food. The marshalls were very positive. A few more direction signs were needed (I went off course 3 times). This was not a major problem as there were always fellow runners or walkers to show the way.

The course is a bit up and down and mostly off road. Crossing the A338 (dual carriageway) was a bit scary. Running through the centre of Salisbury for the final mile is different. You get a few bemused looks from the tourists.

If you want run your first Ultra or trail run I would highly recommend this event. Lots of beautiful countryside.
