Ladies November 2014 Race Report

Written by
Not a vast amount of races to report this month, but a vast amount of ladies to report on!!
This race takes place 3 times a year -  April, August and November.  I did the August one and enjoyed it soooo much, I returned for November! Weather was great and we had the added entertainment of a Boat Race taking place on the Thames, although this did make the route rather busy with spectators both on foot and bikes, and then runners having to duck and dive as the boats were entering and leaving the race at various points, but it was another great "Harriers Day out" :-)
78th     Caroline Horder        3.42.51      1st F55
109th   Joanna Tomsett        3.52.40
121st   Julie White                3.56.04
157th   Heather Khoshnevis  4.08.31                    (324 finishers)
This is a 7.5 mile race which was part of the DRRL.  Unfortunately we did  not make a team, but we still had to very fine performances as below
122nd    Trisha Reilly         1.03.29
177th     Janet Hooper        1.16.20
This was one of the Harriers "Getaway Trips" and always good fun!  There were quite a few of us that went, about 12 which included 2 runners from others clubs, always welcome!...... A little history lesson in case you are interested!!

  • The modern Athens Marathon commemorates the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield at the site of the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C.
  • Legend has it that Pheidippides delivered the momentous message "Niki!" ("victory"), then collapsed and died.
  • The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course and it's the same course used in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.
  • The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896 in Greece.
  • The legend of Pheidippides was honored by a 24.85 mile (40,000 meters) run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens.
  • Athens Stadium, the finish line for the Athens Marathon stands on the site of a stadium used in classical times.
  • Spiridon Louis, a Greek postal worker, won the first modern Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 58 minutes, 50 seconds.
  • At the 1908 Olympic Games in London, the marathon distance was changed to 26.2 miles to cover the ground from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium, with the 2.2 miles added on so the race could finish in front of royal family's viewing box. This added two miles to the course, and is the origin of the Marathon tradition of shouting "God save the Queen!" (or other words relating to the Queen) as mile post 24 is passed.
  • .......Well if you didnt know...then you do now!!!

Well what can I say!!!  I thought Wimborne had a huge turnout but at this one we had 14 !!! Brilliant!   This race is always popular as it so well organised and very friendly.  Bournenmouth Joggers host this and many Littledown Harriers help with the marshalling so we get plenty of support en route!  It was not a great day...very wet and muddy in places, but still, we were there in our great Orange Force!  Again I have noticed more new names and I understand that many of these are from our very popular and successful Beginners Group! Welcome to our club and I hope to see you all again soon at races and training.  Well done to everyone who took part.
