Mens June 2017 Race Report

June 2017

Dartmoor Discovery 32 miles Ultra (3rd June)

Thanks go to Graham for submitting this race report: "My first Dartmoor Discovery and not my last. Fantastic but stupidly hilly route and very well organised, besides the torrential rain greeting me for the final 6.5 miles

The race starts in Princetown, and follows a route passing through Dartmeet, Poundsgate, Newbridge, Ashburton, Buckland in the Moor, Widecombe in the Moor, and Postbridge, before making its way back to finish in Princetown.

You experience everything Dartmoor can offer, from stunning views, beautiful scenery, wild ponies and unpredictable weather. The course is not easy, it's a great way to test you both mentally and physically!"

Poole 10k (4th June) - 1106 finishers

A fairly warm day (as usual) for this race, I think the earlier start this year probably was a good thing so we avoided the heat of the afternoon! Another good Harrier turnout at this local race. Welll done all.

Puddletown Plod Half Marathon (11th June)

Thanks again to Graham for submitting the race report: "The ‘Plod’ is part of our CC and part of the DRRL. This is a lovely one lap race (out and back with an 8 mile loop), undulating in parts (not enough undulating in my opinion!) and of course the great selection of cakes afterwards. Well done for those who achieved a PB"

Hampshire Hoppit Trail Marathon (18th June)

Thanks to Graham for submitting this race report: "The Hampshire Hoppit marathon includes local sections of famous long distance footpaths, the Wayfarers Walk being one. This was a single-lap course that started and ended at Kingsclere on the Hampshire/Berkshire border, reaching some of the highest points in Hampshire with views across the county. There was occasional quiet road sections / road crossings. It was extremely hot with a very nasty Hill to start."

Purbeck 10k (23rd June)

A huge Harrier turnout for this popular race - and 2 Harriers in the top 4 finishers!! Wow. A tough undulating course, but lovely for us all to be able to cheer our fellow Harriers as it's an out and back course. Almost as impressive was the Harrier turnout at the pub afterwards - a Harriers pub takeover!!!

Giants Head Marathon and Sydling Hill Race (24th June)

Thanks again to Graham for submitting this race report: "Officially the best Marathon in the UK voted by Runnersworld Magazine 2014 saw a good turn out by the Harriers. The fifth running of the Giants Head Marathon in the beautiful village of Sydling St.Nicholas is a very, very challenging, hilly but beautiful course running through the Sydling and Cerne valleys running around and under the famous Cerne Giant. There was a beer tent, camping and a Hog Roast and an after party barn dance, AND not forgetting the famous but rather large ice creams. The next day there is a 7k and 3k bell race open to all ages"

Exeter Marathon (21st May)

Another marathon report by our marathon man Graham Malt! "A hot but windy day for this flat marathon starting at Exeter football club. After running through the town it was 3 laps of the river taking in the Quay en route. It was very well supported around the Quay area"

Dorchester Marathon and Half Marathon (28th May)

Thanks again to Graham for submitting this report… "Great day at the inaugural Dorchester Marathon organised by White Star Running. A testing but scenic single lap race through the Dorset countryside on closed roads that also incorporated a half marathon. Fantastic organisation, great location, brilliant marshals & drink stations with lots of pockets of support throughout the course and not forgetting a great barn dance in the evening for those who camped the night."

Liverpool Rock 'n' Roll Marathon (28th May)

Thanks to Mark Everett for submitting this race report - and well done guys, PBs all round! "Three Harrier Men made the trip up north to Liverpool to take part in the marathon and half. Both races took in similar routes starting at the Albert Docks, with the marathon heading up to the football stadiums and then back through town past the Cavern Club and then out to Sefton Park where you run on a stretch of Penny Lane (with the song playing as you run!) before heading down to the river with the final 4 miles along the Mersey and finishing back in the docks at the Echo Arena. A well organised event which was hillier than expected and with bands playing all along the way to keep you going!"

Taunton Marathon (2nd April)

Thanks go to Greg Bemment for submitting this race report: "Graham and I had already sampled the tapas bars of Spain this year with earlier marathons of Barcelona and Seville respectively. Now it was time for the cider dens of Taunton. The Taunton marathon consists of two laps. The first one is run with about 1500 people doing the half marathon and in the second lap this drops down to 200 for the marathon. Each lap has a longish gradual climb and two short, sharp hills but neither of us thought it was particularly hilly. If the weather is good the second lap can get a bit warm as it's a 10.30 start. Support was surprisingly good as was the organisation. Half the time you are running out of the town and the other half is in countryside. Overall it was a good day with both of us achieving PBs!"

Southampton Marathon and Half Marathon (23rd April)

Thanks go to Glenn Batt for submitting this race report: "A good Harrier turnout for this race with most of us travelling to the event by train. A very well organised and enjoyable run with good numbers in all 3 races as there was also a 10K. The crowds also turned out in good numbers to support the runners despite another marathon on live TV. Eight Harrier "men" completed the Marathon and two the Half. Graham 'Malty' Malt went one better and covered 30 plus miles. Apparently he completely missed the coned filter lane and the marshals directing marathon runners left and 10K runners right on the second of the two laps. In all fairness he did mange the correct route on the first lap. It is a myth that Malty was overtaken by the marathon lead car and lead runner before realising the error of his ways. There is also no truth in the rumour that he popped into one of the popular, open on Sunday morning establishments, to take bread and wine! To Malty's credit he made his way back to where he had gone awry in order to complete the full marathon route plus his extra miles. I would like to pass on my heartfelt thanks to Malty for gifting me my first, and no doubt my last, 1st Harrier home placing!"

Apologies for the late report this month guys... well done to all those who raced, and good luck to all those training for Spring marathons - Spring marathon season is upon us! A good harrier turnout for the 2nd year of this race that fits into the calendar nicely as a tester for those on Spring marathon training plans and is part of the Club Championship… well done all

Thanks go to Graham for submitting this race report: "The route for Barcelona Marathon 2017 begins at Avenida de La Reina Maria Cristina and leads out to Plaza Espanya. You then wind around a 25 mile flat circuit of Barcelona which have some of the most famous monuments en route. The first half was shaded but soon warmed up once we headed towards the sea front. The atmosphere was amazing with plenty of different types of music to keep us going all around the course.  Well done to Glenn on a PB, beats his previous best from when he was 21"

Queen Elizabeth Spring Marathon (26th March)

Thanks again Graham for submitting this race report: "This tough marathon is run entirely on a half-marathon course within the country park (and the adjacent, aptly named "Head Down" plantation) this is a trail run along well kept trails.  There were some hilly challenges that took us on journey of over 500 metres of elevation gain over a 13 mile loop. Once away from the busy front part of the country park, you find yourself in the quiet peaceful forest.  Later, as you are on the last high point before you drop down to the finish area, there are long views through the clearings to the Solent and Isle of Wight."

Mens February 2017 Race Report

February 2017

Thanks to Luke my Vice Captain who has pulled together most of this months report :)

Another fantastic turnout at the races this month, keep up all the good work guys and the sea of orange is definitely growing!

We had three key races this month, from the DRRL, Club Championship and rounds one and two of the imperial series.

As always let me know if I have missed any races that aren't in any of the leagues!

Blackmore Vale Half Marathon (5th Feb) - 365 finishers

This was a Club Championship and DRRL race. There were many harriers throughout the field and some great times and PB’s. It was a windy day and a particularly undulating course so these times are fantastic!

Thanks go to Barry Telling for submiting this race report :) "Starting in front of the magnificent Longleat House the race takes in the estates' private, and traffic-free roads, with only a short excursion of 400m on public highways as you pass the Bath Arms pub before the final mile downhill to the finish."

Lytchett 10 Mile (12th Feb) - 474 finishers

Vice Captain report: "This one was in all three leagues as mentioned above, great conditions on the day, apart from being very cold! And of course the usual undulating route to challenge us." A massive Harrier turnout, and a great result in securing 2nd team for the Road Race League by our top 5 finishers!!

Bournemouth 10 Mile (26th Feb)

A DRRL and imperial series run, the second of three. This one wasn’t very undulating for once this month, however it was very very winding on the return leg. So well done to everyone who took part and if you managed a PB in tough conditions.

Somerley 10K 02 January 2017:

Somerley 2017

It wasn’t such a wash out this year, thankfully!

There have also been lots of strong performances at all the local parkruns, and if you’re starting you marathon training, good luck! And don’t forget the Sunday club runs to help you build up the miles.

Keep an eye out for the Club championship and DRRL races as entries are filling up fast for most races! February brings us:

  • Blackmore vale Half marathon à 5th Feb (CC and DRRL)
  • Lytchett manor 10 Mile à 12th Feb (CC, DRRL and Imperial Series)
  • Bournemouth 10 Mile à 26th Feb (DRRL and Imperial Series)

As always, well done in all the races this month and let me know if I have missed anything. And keep up the great running!!

November 2016

Avon Heath - Wessex XC League (6th November) - 62 finishers

A chilly day for this approximate 10k - particularly it was only an approximate 10k for runners from 4th to about 20th place as we accidently took a 0.6 mile-ish short-cut!! A good fun day out followed by cake in the cafe :-)

Wimborne 10 mile (20th November) - 464 finishers

A massive Harrier turnout for the penultimate race in both the Dorset Road Race League and our own Club Championship. We were very lucky with the conditions, the torrential rain and gale force winds gave way to calm, mild, almost perfect running weather! Unfortunately we were pipped by Poole Runners for the 1st place for the league, so it was all to play for in the final race at Boscombe 10k for the league!

Boscombe10k 2016

A huge turnout for this local race - the final DRRL and CC race for the season. We needed to finish above Poole Runners as a team, and be at least 2nd to snatch the 2nd place in the DRRL - and we just scraped it! Great running guys! A fantastic result for the Harriers.

Mens October 2016 Race Report

October 2016

Bournemouth Marathon Festival (1st - 2nd October)

Lots of Harriers were out over the weekend - both supporting and racing for what feels like a home race! Unfortunately for the Saturday 10k'ers it was very windy along the seafront which hampered performances… not so for the Half Marathon on Sunday - low wind and near perfect conditions for the 2nd year in a row! The marathon too was in good conditions - although it did feel rather warm by the end of the marathon (and I was just spectating for that!). Well done all.

Vitality Oxford Half Marathon (9th October) - 7645 finishers

Thanks to Dave Wilson for submitting a very thorough race report! "Oxford is my home city. It’s where the mighty Yellows (OUFC) create their football magic and I used to try and copy them with a Sunday morning hangover. Anyway, enough of football; I will concentrate on running.
I ran the Vitality Oxford Half Marathon two years ago and the organisation was not good (shuttle buses late, start delayed by 20 minutes, and the course was not scenic). I vowed never to run it again. I’m a forgiving man, and so now I’m back. The course has been changed to a ‘glorious city centre route that celebrates everything that we love about this beautiful city!’.
The morning was fresh as I left my parents, house and drove to the dreaming spires of Oxford (actually a side road two miles from the centre. Free parking ). I jogged to the Race Village and tried not to look bored for half an hour. The start is about a 10 minute walk from the Village and there are no toilets at the start which as you can imagine creates a few problems.
The course is fairly flat (130ft elevation), with no major hills. The temperature was around 14oC and a slight breeze. Good running conditions. They have improved the course. The run starts and finishes in the centre of Oxford and you run through many picturesque areas. My run was a bit of a struggle, but I managed a reasonable time. The Goody Bag was good and the bag collection worked a treat. I jogged back to the car and drove to my parents’ house, and a well-earned delicious Sunday lunch at a family friend."

Isle of Wight Marathon (9th October)

Thank you Graham for sending in this result and race report "60th Isle of Wight marathon. Two of us did this tough hilly marathon, a challenging course". Graham was 27th overall and 3rd in age group knocking 12 minutes off his previous best - well done mate, great running!!

Position Name Time

Gold Hill 10k (9th October) - 241 finishers

GoldHill10k 2016

Good conditions and a decent Harrier turnout for this Club Championship and Road Race League event. For the Road Race we did well on the day beating our main rivals - the Poole clubs, with a special mention to Mark G who managed to catch and pass a Poole Runner on the finishing straight at sub-4 min mile pace!! (Especially impressive after running all those hills!). It's a slightly undulating race (ahem) - but good 'fun' - with the famous climb up Gold Hill (from the old Hovis adverts) coming after about 1k.
